Six Advantages Of Selective Laser Melting (SLM)
- Mar 09, 2018 -

With the continuous maturation of 3D printing technology and continuous breakthroughs in material application science, it is now possible to directly apply 3D printed metal or plastic parts to aerospace, automobile production, and medical industries.

The working principle of 3D printing makes it uniquely advantageous in the production of complex structural parts. That is to say, the more complex the shape and structure of the parts, the more advantageous it is to use 3D printing for manufacturing.

More and more areas such as jewellery, footwear, industrial design, construction, engineering and construction (AEC), automotive, education, geographic information systems, civil engineering, etc., can all use 3D printing.

3D printing (additive manufacturing) is a type of rapid prototyping technology. Based on a mathematical model file, a powdery metal or plastic bonded material, and a laser or other heat source is used to manufacture the product. 3D printing process methods can be divided into FDM (fusion deposition type), SLS (selective laser sintering), SLM (selective laser melting molding) and other types, corresponding to different materials, FDM general processing of thermoplastic materials, such as wax, ABS , Nylon, etc., SLS is currently used to process waxes, plastics, etc. SLM can process metal powders.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is a rapid prototyping technology for metal powders. It can directly form metal parts that are almost completely dense. No adhesives are needed. The molding accuracy and mechanical properties are better than those of SLS. Therefore, it is more and more widely used in 3D printing.

SLM process

A layer of metal power is processed by high power laser beam to fusion type. After the fusion is completed, the operating platform lowers the distance by one layer and continues to process the next layer of powder. This step is repeated until the designated area (selected for processing) is designated. When all casting is completed, a three-dimensional compound is obtained. The required products (parts) are accumulated by layer-by-layer processing.

The Benefits of 3D Printing Applying SLM

Strong comprehensive functions, can reduce assembly time, improve material utilization, and save direct costs;

Reduce time-to-market - The production process is more flexible and suitable for products with shorter product life cycles;

There is almost no restriction on the shape of the product, and parts such as cavities and three-dimensional grids can be produced.

Products or parts can be printed quickly, reducing inventory and revitalizing funds;

Does not require expensive production equipment;

The product quality is better, and the mechanical load performance can be compared with the traditional production technology (such as forging, etc.).
